KLM Royal Dutch Airlines: baggage, cabins and what to expect
KLM connects Europe with destinations around the world through Amsterdam Schiphol. This guide explains what changes between fare types, where Premium Comfort fits in, and what to check before booking.
The most important detail is the fare type. A ticket labelled Economy does not always include the same cabin or checked baggage. Basic, Light, Standard and Flex have different allowances, and the rules may also vary by route. Check the allowance shown for your exact flight before paying.

KLM lists a maximum size of 55 × 35 × 25 cm for a hand-baggage item. The combined cabin-baggage weight is generally 12 kg in Economy and Premium Comfort and 18 kg in Business. The small bag counts toward that weight. See KLM’s hand-baggage rules and checked-baggage rules for the latest details.
Practical tip: compare the final price after adding the bags you need. A Light fare plus a checked bag can cost more than a Standard fare on the same flight.
Economy, Premium Comfort and Business
Economy
The standard choice for short-haul and long-haul travel. Baggage and seat-selection terms depend on the fare. Economy Comfort is an extra-legroom seating option within Economy, rather than a separate travel class.
Premium Comfort
A separate cabin on eligible intercontinental flights, positioned between Economy and Business. It offers more space and a distinct onboard service; availability depends on the aircraft and route.
Business
KLM offers Business on eligible flights, with the onboard product varying between European and intercontinental routes. Check the aircraft and seat map if a particular seat type matters to you.
Lounges
At Schiphol, access to KLM Crown Lounges is included with Business Standard and Flex tickets. Certain Flying Blue and SkyTeam elite members also qualify; other travellers may be able to pay for entry.

Is KLM a good choice for your trip?
KLM is worth considering when its Amsterdam connection gives you a convenient itinerary or when you can use Flying Blue benefits. Compare the complete journey: departure time, connection length, fare conditions, baggage and total price. A cheaper ticket can be a poor deal if it requires a long transfer or extra baggage fees.
