01 / GET TO KNOW THE CITY

Follow the river.
Take the detour.

Porto is a city to explore in layers: hilltop views, tiled interiors and a waterfront that changes character as the light moves.

Start in the historic center, then let the streets pull you downhill to Ribeira. Across the Douro, Vila Nova de Gaia offers a different view back toward Porto and a long connection to port wine.

Distances on a map can look short, but the slopes matter. Build each day around one area, pause often and use transit when you want to save your energy for the streets themselves.

Visit Porto's historic district guide is a useful reference for the main sights around the river and the old town.

Ribeira

Wander the narrow streets above the river, then follow the quay for views of the colorful facades and the bridge. The area is busy, so leave time to explore beyond the most photographed stretch.

Pair it with a walk toward the bridge.

HISTORIC CENTER

Sé and São Bento

Use the cathedral precinct as a viewpoint, then head to São Bento station to look at the azulejo panels in its hall. These are easy stops to connect on a walk through the old town.

Expect slopes and stone paving.
